Innovative 'gum to mould' technology

The launch of innovative 'gum to mould' technology with the ability to deposit chewing gum and incorporate chewing gums into candies and lollipops provides exciting new product opportunities for the confectionery industry.

Baker Perkins, world leader in depositing technology, Cafosa, the leading gum base supplier and Firmenich the leading supplier of flavours have worked together to develop this exciting new technology. New depositing lines and conversion kits retrofitted to existing plants can provide confectionery producers with access to the fastest growing sector in the confectionery industry. Multi coloured and shaped gum products and coloured, striped or transparent hard candies and lollipops with a gum centre bring immense new product potential.

For existing chewing gum producers, complete preparation-to-packaging depositing systems bring exciting possibilities in chewing gum shapes, coloured combinations of stripes and layers, and high percentage centre-fill products.

All gum-filled and chewing gum piece products can be produced in sugar and sugar-free variants. Baker Perkins has extensive experience in the supply of equipment for sugar free applications and can add this capability to existing systems, or deliver new plant.

The recognized benefits of the depositing process provide quality and marketing advantages for chewing gum products - including consistently high accuracy of shape and weight for cost control and packaging efficiency, plus the opportunity to produce unique innovative products that can't be made with traditional chewing gum forming technologies.

Low scrap rates, labour requirements and maintenance needs all contribute to the attractive cost-of-ownership of depositing systems.

Hard candy products with chewing gum centres are made on depositing plants with aluminium moulds. Depositing of chewing gum only products is achieved using rubber moulds to ensure clean and efficient ejection of the finished product. Baker Perkins is able to offer a range of depositor designs including ServoForm Universal plants to enable production of the full range of chewing gum and chewing gum/candy products on one line.

The addition of gum to the wide catalogue of confectionery handled by Baker Perkins depositors follows intensive development work in the company's Innovation Centre at Peterborough in the UK.

The three market-leading companies were all involved in the development of the new technology over a three-year period.  Baker Perkins has more than 500 confectionery depositors installed around the world, producing a broad selection of hard and soft candies, and lollipops. Complete solutions are offered, including product and process development and equipment from ingredient handling through to packing.

Cafosa, based in Barcelona, is the leading gum base supplier - one in every two chewing gum makers around the world chooses Cafosa. There is a current portfolio of 70 standard-reference gum base products, and the ability to tailor any of them to the specific needs of each customer

Firmenich is Swiss based and the largest privately held company in the fragrance and flavour industry worldwide. FlexaromeÒ, the latest addition to their range of encapsulated flavour technologies offers visual appeal through particles of coloured flavour clearly visible in the candy. FlexaromeÒ delivers an enhanced flavour release, ideally suited to deposited candies and lollipops.
