EM390-1

Over-band machine for multi-purpose, multi-product lines

Baker Perkins has extended its range of EM390 rotary moulders with an over-band machine designed for multi-purpose and multi-product lines.

An EM390 located above the band of a sheet and cut line for hard and semi-sweet biscuits can be brought on-line as required to add soft biscuits or cookies to the product mix.   Changeover between sheet and cut and rotary moulded production is simple and rapid.

When an assortment of products needs to be made simultaneously, an EM390 moulding roll can be engraved with a variety of designs across its width.  It can also be engraved with half the usual number of rows: the ‘blank’ spaces being filled by output from a wirecut machine or depositor.

This maximizes variety: PLC technology is used to exactly match linear speed from the two units.

The only criterion on multiple product operation is the need for similarity in weight and thickness to ensure even baking of every product.

A new, innovative sandwiching option involves two synchronized EM390 units depositing alternate rows of different coloured dough – chocolate and vanilla are typical choices.   This avoids the complicated product handling systems needed when both colors are produced on the same moulder by dividing the hopper.

Productivity from a standard EM390 - widely used for moulded biscuits, bars, mini cookies and pet food - is raised by the new option of a 60-inch wide machine for high output lines.

Recent upgrading has also enhanced end product quality by optimum filling of the mould cavities, achieved by larger diameter rolls, and separate drives for feed and die rolls.

The EM390 was launched in the European market at this year’s Interpack exhibition in Düsseldorf; the combination of an unrivalled range of standard features and options has already made it the industry-standard North American rotary moulder, whatever the level of production.

The high-specification basic machine gives tight piece weight control, with easy cleaning and rapid changeovers providing cost savings and improved ‘up time’ to make payback extremely attractive.    For more challenging production environments any of 15 options can be added for enhanced flexibility and control.

Standard features include rapid die and web roll changes to minimize downtime; a tangential knife with ‘on the run’ adjustment for better piece weight control; outboard drives to improve sanitation in the product area; and PLC controls with a touch-screen operator interface.

Options include independent drive, automatic web tensioning, motorized knife adjustment, automatic belt tracking, roll width to suit customer, oil spray for efficient release, feed roll heating or cooling, and dough level probes. For heavy sanitation requirements, corrosion proof stainless steel models are available.

The standard unit is portable, but can be integrated with a fully automatic dough feed system to reduce labour costs.
