A new range of extruded snacks

Launched at Interpack: innovative products for a rapidly changing market -
Baker Perkins is launching a significant new range of extruded snacks at Interpack (Hall2 Stand A03).
The option of replacing traditional savoury fillings with real fruit brings positive nutrition into the extruded snack arena; a totally new selection of innovative shapes creates additional opportunities by adding interest and variety.
The concept supports manufacturers facing the challenge of a rapidly changing commercial environment, in which traditional savoury snacks have been singled out for criticism because of high levels of fats and salt.
The product is a co-extruded wafer – a thin ‘credit card’ type form that opens up a whole new area of marketing opportunities including dips and countlines.
These slim, flat, rectangular products can also incorporate fruit or savoury fillings; they may be positioned as snacks in their own right or as ‘dipping’ products – perhaps a fruit filled snack into a yoghurt, a healthy peanut butter into savoury spread, or a tomato filled snack into cheese.
Because of their shape, a small amount of filling occupies a large area, and consequently gives an intensely flavoured product. They can be based on any of the complete range of grains processed by extrusion such as corn, wheat, or rice.
As a development of well proven extrusion technology, both new products can be made with minimal capital outlay on existing systems. Process technology, equipment, and customer support are all available from Baker Perkins as a complete solution.
Simultaneously, major additions are being made to the range of shapes possible by co-extrusion. Filled tubes can be cut into long pieces to create finger products that might rival conventional count lines.
To add value, these can be filled with two different flavours or products – fruit and yoghurt for example – before being coated
