Control system upgrade for Tweedy mixers

Date: 08 May 2006

Tweedy mixer control system extended architecture

Bakeries around the world can rejuvenate existing Tweedy mixers with an upgraded control system from Baker Perkins. Better consistency of the mixing process, less maintenance, and a more user-friendly operator interface are among the benefits.

Many Tweedy mixers in daily use are mechanically sound, but their control systems are obsolete and provide limited functionality.  Taking advantage of recent developments to upgrade the controls improves performance and extends the useful life of the machine.

Baker Perkins' package extends from site survey and design of the new system to commissioning and operator training.  New control systems are all based on industry standard off-the-shelf components, but are tailored to suit individual requirements.

Tweedy mixers are fitted with one of three types of control system, for which different levels of upgrade are available.

Recent machines incorporating PLC and HMI (Programmable Logic Controller and Human Machine Interface) control systems can be upgraded with four key features:

A reporting system that records process conditions and ingredients used in every mix;
A production data capture system automatically recording mixing variables, quality checks and causes of downtime;
Remote monitoring reducing downtime by rapid fault diagnosis and rectification;
An operator swipe card system to enhance security by restricting use to authorised personnel.

Older mixers with previous generation PLC systems or other programmable controllers can be upgraded to the latest level of PLC and HMI control, including the options mentioned above.  A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) upgrade is a further possibility, providing surge and spike protection to computer equipment as well as minimising or eliminating data loss in the event of power failure.

Even the oldest generation of Tweedy mixers with relay controls can benefit.  Available upgrades include a new energy meter that improves mixing consistency by higher accuracy energy measurement; and new load cell technology that is both more accurate and more reliable.

Control upgrades are one of a number of retrofit opportunities for Tweedy mixers, designed to enable bakeries to maintain their competitive edge without the need to replace mechanically sound machinery before the end of its natural life cycle.

Other upgrade packages for Tweedy mixing systems include the addition of pressure/vacuum mixing with cost saving and quality enhancing benefits; and inverter control for the main motor, creating a high degree of versatility during mixing.
