Twin Screw Extruders for Plastics Extrusion

Within the plastics processing machinery market, Baker Perkins is a recognised leader in the supply of twin screw extruders used for compounding and mixing a wide range of polymers. The applications in which our machines are used range from the traditional markets of filled and reinforced compounds and masterbatches, to the more demanding production of hot melt adhesives and other specialised compounding applications.
Our industrial extruder division (IED) is located in purpose built premises at Peterborough, where both design and manufacturing operations are carried out using state of the art computer controlled machinery. This manufacturing facility is supported by an extensive Process Technology Centre where machinery development and process research is carried out.

Our Production extruders are supported by a range of laboratory extruders for use in product development and colour matching applications. The laboratory series extruders can be supplied with ancillary equipment to fully mirror the production environment. Over 250 such units have been supplied to R & D and technical support departments of major players throughout the industry.

Thanks to Baker Perkins' engineering expertise, the past few years have seen the development of a new range of twin screw extruders created specifically for the plastics machinery sector. Coupled with the latest 3-D CAD programmes, the result is an integrated range of extruders that specically meets the demands of the industry.
Amongst the many standard features on Baker Perkins' twin screw extruders are segmented screw components and high speed and high torque drive systems. The design of the processing section can be tailored to needs of the process, depending on the preferres metallurgy and whether high volume or high torque is required.

All extruders are supported by a selection of operator interfaces and data logging systems. These allow machines to be integrated into a total management information system based on the wonderware (TM) software suite, to provide full factory monitoring and control.
Extruders are available in machine diameters from 19mm to 125mm with process lengths from 15:1 to 45:1.
At the heart of the plastics processing system

Baker Perkins extruders are all fitted with a segmented agitator system to process all types of plastic based forumlations. The proven clamshell barrel opens hydraulically to allow easy access for efficient cleaning or maintenance of the screws.
Melt temperature, specific energy input and residence time can be precisely controlled to ensure the highest product quality.
The option of high-torque or high free-volume versions allow the
extruder specification to be matched to the customers duty.
Option of 1200rpm drive maximises output potentials and adds extra
versatility to the processing capabilities of the Advanced
Compounder.
New segmented liner insert system allows rapid liner replacement and reduced maintenance costs. Liner materials are carefully chosen to match the specified processing duty in each of the extruder zones.
Baker Perkins offer the expertise and knowledge to integrate the compounder into a complete process line with centralised control of the total package. Control Systems offered from Baker Perkins include alternatives from a basic manual control with PLC through fully integrated data management systams based on Wonderware In Touch to fully automated process lines.
Whether the application is for a specialised additive masterbatch application or a large output filling or compounding line Baker Perkins have the expertise and experience to supply a tailored solution to match customers requirements.
For product development or colour matching, Baker Perkins offers
small bench mounted 19mm and 24mm extruders, designed to the same
geometry as production plants. This allows reliable scale-up from
laboratory data to production results.
